The federal election campaign is now underway, and one of the most asked questions now is how the 21 October elections will affect the immigration system of Canada. One way to answer that is by looking at the history of Canada’s immigration system.

Immigration Levels

Since 1990, Canada welcomed over 6 million people, and the numbers are expected to increase in the upcoming years.

Thanks to the friendly approach of Canada, the country is planning to bring in over 1 million more immigrants in the upcoming 3 years.

Earlier this year, the parliament of Canada announced that they are planning to allow over 1 million new permanent residents in the country in just 3 years.

Canada wants to bring in 360,000 people in 2020, and for 2021, Canada wants to bring in 370,000.

In 2017 alone, Canada welcomed over 286,000 immigrants and for this year, it is projected that the country will welcome over 350,000 people.

From 2017 to June 2018, applications for Canadian Citizenship rose by 130 percent. Nigeria, Philippines, and India are amongst the 10 countries that sent immigrants to Canada.

What To Expect?

Liberals and Conservatives have different approaches when it comes to laws, citizenship policies, and many more. But one thing they have in common is Immigration.

This means that the Immigration System of Canada will continue to stay on track and continue to allow immigrants to come into the country and settle down.

Percentage

Under the Conservative Government, 63 percent of Canada’s Immigrants arrived in the country under the economic class, 27 percent under the family class, and 10 percent under the refugee class.

On the other hand, the Liberals have increased the shares of the refugee class to about 15 percent, reduced the share of the economic class to 58 percent, and kept the family class share unchanged.

As per the immigration plans of Canada until 2021, the Liberals want to maintain the current composition.

If the Conservatives win this time, they are expected to increase the share of the economic class to over 60 percent and reduce the share of the refugee class.

What About The Plans Of Other Parties?

  • People’s Party of Canada

Maxime Bernier, a former Conservative, wants to bring overall immigration levels to 150,000. The numbers that are presented by the PPC are less than half of the current immigration levels.

Bernier said the PPC wants to prioritize economically and accept fewer refugees. The party also wants to limit those that are accepted under the family reunification program and remove the option to sponsor grandparents and parents under the Super Visa Consultant Calgary.

  • Green Party

The Green party has promised a number of things when it comes to immigration. But they want to eliminate the TFWP (Temporary Foreign Worker Program) and increase the immigration where shortages are established.

  • NDP (New Democratic Party)

Led by Jagmeet Singh, the main priority of the NDP is Family Reunification. The party has pledged to remove the cap on parents and grandparents and to reduce the processing times for applications, which includes common-law partners and spouses.

The party also committed that they will match the economic intake with labor force needs and will help resettle refugees.
